THOMAS’S FOUNDATION – FUNDRAISING AT BATTERSEA

Donating Old Mobile Phones – Raising Money Through Recycling

HOW IT WORKS:

Thomas’s Foundation is introducing an initiative at Thomas’s Battersea to donate old, redundant mobile phones to raise money for charity. This will be an easy and environmentally friendly way to dispose of unwanted mobile phone handsets.

The phones will be collected in a metal box that will be located in the tunnel outside the Second Hand Shop. All donated phones will be removed at the end of each day during the collection period and stored in a safe. Mobile phones – handsets only – can be in any condition but with all personal data removed. At the end of the donation period they will be sent to company whose business is to recycle them. A log will be kept of all mobiles donated and sent to ShP.

The Foundation has researched companies who do this and has chosen to use ShP for Charity, a complete online mobile phone recycling service. To date ShP for Charity has raised over £2 million for charities of all sizes through mobile phone recycling.

RAISING MONEY:

Thomas’s Foundation will get 100% of the proceeds of every handset donated. ShP covers their costs and makes a margin on the phones when they sell them on – the break up value of the phone being greater than the nominal value of the handset. At the end of the collection period ShP will arrange for a courier to collect the phones. The service is free, environmentally friendly and there is a short lead time between collection of the handsets and Thomas’s Foundation receiving proceeds generated.

SECURITY:

Before donating any handsets all SIM cards and personal data must be removed from the phone. For non smart phones this is a fairly simple process – each manufacturer is different, but instructions can be found in the ‘settings’ instructions for the phone and on the internet. Apple devices can be erased by following these steps in the following order: Settings – General – Reset – Erase All Content & Settings. The SIM card should then be removed and service suspended.

As a precaution SHP undertakes to wipe all data off all devices and reset them to factory settings when they reach their warehouse. Standard mobile phones are reset with a simple factory reset code. For smart phones – Blackberry’s and iPhones – ShP uses a memory wiping software Blancco which is an MOD approved wiping system originally developed for use on PC hard drives. ShP has worked with them to develop a Smartphone wipe.

ShP is ISO 27001 (security) accredited for data storage and destruction procedures and CheckMend registered – a database held by Police and Insurance companies to stop phone theft.

After our successful participation in the inaugural Friends of Battersea Square fair last May, we are delighted sponsor this community event once again. This occasion was a wonderful way to bring together the many different aspects of our community: parents, pupils, children, schools, shops, etc. This year we added to our table of brochures, stickers and sweets with the addition of a table for children to fashion plasticene sculptures. See the photos in our gallery! Thank you to our volunteers who set and manned our stall, and supervised the children.

News on last year’s event:

Many thanks to James Murphy, Evan Langmuir, Louis Elton and Oliver Jenkins who showed admirable initiative last Saturday in Battersea Square. After performing on stage at Summer in the Square, the four Year 8 Battersea boys busked in the street next to the Foundation table and donated all of their earnings to the Foundation. Bravo!

Our stall was busy throughout the day creating lively exchanges with neighbours and community groups with which we work and with those we were pleased to meet. Many thanks to Angela McDonald for organising the entire day. The Foundation was proud to participate in an event that demonstrated so well Thomas’s leadership in successful community building.

On (insert date) Thomas’s Schools Foundation held a Strategy meeting for committee volunteers to lay out plans for 2010/2011 as well as longer term goals. The meeting was very well attended with almost all members of the Communities, Development and Bursary Committees in attendance, as well as TSF founders, Joanna and David Thomas. With so many additional new faces, it was also an excellent opportunity to meet in person and share inspired stories from our community activities. It was agreed that we will continue these meetings annually.

Many thanks to (Head of Kensington) for supplying the venue and attending the meeting as well.

The Foundation First Aid Fortnight was a fantastic way to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Thomas’s Schools Foundation. This is the first time the Foundation has organised a simultaneous event across all four Thomas’s Schools. It required an enormous amount of hard work, so there are a lot of people we need to thank!

The teachers and support staff at all the schools without whose help and cooperation the event could not have taken place.

The PTA Chairs have been invaluable with their support and encouragement, and we are very grateful to the PTAs for their generous financial donations over the years.

Irene Penny at the Red Cross and her trainers–Carrie, Margaret, Netty and Sue–have all done a magnificent job. They have trained 1018 children over the four prep schools and run assemblies for some of the lower schools.

Fru fru for the delicious cupcakes.

Springfield Promotions for the Foundation First Aid bags and key chains. If you want to fill your child’s bag visit the Red Cross website for guidance on what to include.

Phil Redding and Victoria Smith at our design firm Wordsearch have been very generous with their time and expertise, not just for FFAF but also generally over the last three years.

And, as you can see by the photos, the children! We were thrilled to provide this first aid training also to many children in our local community as part of our continuing outreach programme and we hope they all enjoyed the training and would like to thank them for taking part in our celebrations. View more photos from the event.
